I wasn't going to post any more before Christmas, but I loved this article in the Wall Street Journal: Can Tolstoy Save Your Marriage by Alain de Botton.

Very interesting. I'm a bit ill at ease with the suggestion of culture as a replacement for religion. At the same time I'm even more ill at ease with the detached attitude that treats literature as irrelevant to real life, the subject of academic parlor games. I suspect that a grounding in real faith is necessary to be able to strike the proper balance so that literature does not try to substitute for God. Probably that's why the core curriculum at UD works so well.

Reading is one form of escape. Running for your life is another.
