I particularly enjoyed this list of 100 Children's Books to Read in a Lifetime. I've actually read most of them. It's kind of an eclectic list, but all the ones that I know on the list are books that I really like. There are some here I'd like my kids to read. I'm happy to report the almost 7th grader and almost 5th grader have become more ready readers. The almost 3rd grader still doesn't care for chapter books, but we've been reading Stuart Little together the last few nights, and she's enjoying listening, even if she doesn't want to read herself. It amuses me when my high schoolers give the youngers a hard time - "I was reading that book in first grade!" They scold me for not making the youngers read more. I know, I know.

I have to speak up for Goodnight, Goodnight Constructions Site. It's perfect little truck-obsessed boys. Mine adore it. And you know I actually don't mind reading it. I actually don't like Goodnight Gorilla as a read aloud. Picture books that don't have words to read on every page give me a bizarre sense of anxiety when I'm reading them aloud. I don't like not having a script when faced with a toddler and a picture book when I'm tired. Just give me the words to read and I can get through it. Give me a blank page that I have to creatively narrate to the child and I have to be in a really good mood to deal with it.
I have to comment right now and say THANK YOU! Your recommendations, even if they are passed on from other places, are ones that interest me. I won't have time for another couple of weeks to delve into the lists, but I sure appreciate having them right here in your post.
Thanks for this list; I'm going to look at it more when I have a minute. At my brother's house last week I stayed in my 6yo nephew's room, and got to see all the books that he and his sister are reading now, many of which are familiar, like the ones on this list.
A neat thing for me this summer was when my college grad daughter offered to clean and purge our bookcases to earn some mone -- which is perfect, as she needs money, and we need purging! As she piled books to donate, I insisted on keeping many of the baby and toddler books, which puzzled her. It was interesting for us both to realize that I want to save some of the books for my GRANDchildren! I am at that age! What happened here???
Looking at the list again.... Enders Game is awesome! Our whole family read it, one after the other, and were sworn to secrecy until everyone had finished.
